Stuff You Don’t Need In A Studio Apartment
Leaving home is both exhilarating and frightening at the same time. While you’re looking forward to a new life of independence, you’re also looking at moving from the comfort of your big family home to a tiny studio apartment. You’re going to have to make some compromises if you want to make a successful transition.
The first thing you need to do is take a good hard look at your new apartment. It’s much smaller than the inside of the moving van you were planning on using to move your stuff, isn’t it? Now go back home and start eliminating the stuff you can live without. Why were you going to take that echo chainsaw with you? Did you plan on firing it up inside your room just for fun? Were you going to use it as a decoration?
Give it to your Dad. Next time the neighbor doesn’t return his McCulloch chainsaw he can use it for backup.
You may be shocked to discover that your apartment is smaller than your bedroom at home, and that’s including the kitchen. You need to take a realistic look around your room and see what you really need. Look at your closet. It’s probably at lest twice as big as the one in your studio. Leave all the toys and stuff that you’ve been hording since you were a kid and take only the things you need now.
What about the bed? Do you have a giant bed topped by a king quilt that you think you can’t live without? You can and must live without it, since it may be bigger than your apartment. You can take your desk with you, but you’re going to have to go buy a convertible sofa or something for your studio.
If you don’t like those, take a look at some futons. They’re great for sleeping on and can double as couches during the day. Even better, you can take that big quilt with you and it can do double time as a couch cover and as a quilt for sleeping under at night. If you like, you can roll up the futon and the quilt and stash them away during the day to give you more space.
Call up the moving company and cancel that big moving van. By the time you’ve eliminated everything you don’t need, you’ll probably be able to fit everything you do need comfortably into the back of a van. Now, when you move into your studio, you’ll have enough space to move around!
