Decorating 101: Pet Friendly Decor

If you have pets, like cats or dogs, then you know that not all interior decorating ideas will work with your pet. People must think about their pets when decorating their homes, just as they would if they had children. The fortunate thing is that we have plenty of options for pet-friendly décor nowadays.

Pet-Friendly Flooring Ideas

Things such as bathroom accidents and mud tracks are bound to happen when you have pets, even with the most well trained animals. This is the exact reason for having a low maintenance flooring option in the home.

One of the worst options for people with pets is carpet flooring. Things like dander and animal hair can stay in the carpet for a while, and they are hard to remove. In the case of removing pet stains from your flooring, carpet definitely makes it the most difficult.

When it comes to pet-friendly flooring options, hardwood floors, laminate and ceramic tile floors are the best options. Not only are these floors easier to clean, but they can also endure more traffic from pets.

If you decide to go with hardwood floors, make sure that you get a finish on the floors to help prevent the pets from scratching the floor or you can also trim their nails on a regular basis. These types of floors can always have area rugs added to them, which are easy to put in a washer and dryer for a quick and easy clean.

Pet Friendly Home Fabrics

Your fabrics should be chosen wisely, especially when it comes to having pets in the home. And if you have a cat or dog or any other type of animal that goes anywhere on the furniture this will be especially important.

When it comes to cats and dogs, your fabrics have to be easy to clean and the pet hair must not become a constant problem. If pet hair is a problem for you, you might want to go with a fabric that is closer in color to your pet’s hair so that you won’t have to clean couches every day. A white or tan couch might not be a good idea if you have a black haired cat.

You’ll also want to consider how easy it is to clean the fabrics. It is much easier to clean stains off microfibers than other fabrics. Woven and textured fabrics aren’t such a great idea since they trap pet hair and make it harder to remove stains. If you have pets and are going to get new furniture, investing in a stain guard might be a good idea; especially since lifting the stain can be made easy by simply following the manufacturer’s directions.

If you have a pet in your home, everything about your décor will be influenced by that fact in some way or another. For example, when it comes to flower arrangements they must be somewhere in the room that your pet can’t get to them. So, when you’re working with pet friendly décor, make sure that you not only take the larger items into consideration, but that you take the smaller ones into consideration as well.
