Appreciating Your Old Or Outdated Equipment
Do you have a study area or den? It may only be a corner of your bedroom. However, you may get quite a bit of work done there. As you look at it, it may appear to be outdated. There are several new things that you would like to have. Maybe you need a new computer workstation desk. Your chair may be worn and tattered. Would you like to have a new work area? It may take a while for that to happen. Instead, try to make it easy on yourself. This will not require money or physical effort.
Walk into your room and close your eyes. Let the years fade away. Travel back in time 100 years. It may take a few moments. Finally, open your eyes and examine the room. Keep in mind that it is one hundred years earlier.
Look at your room of 100 years ago. You may barely recognize it. There might be a pencil and pad of paper on your desk. If you are lucky or well off, you may have a typewriter. You will notice something else. Clocks are very different. You have to wind things like men’s watches, in order for them to work. It is fine to have a calendar to look at. Do not look for anything that uses electricity. You probably cannot afford those luxury items.
Maybe you like to write. It is going to be considerably more work. When you make a mistake, your only recourse is to mark it out or start over. Forget about the convenience of word processors. Your contact with the world will be somewhat limited. Do you live in a large urban setting? You can get your news from newspapers or your neighbors. There is no six o’clock news to enjoy. You cannot even turn on a radio. If you can afford it, you may own a phonograph.
You can smoke if you wish. It is not considered a health hazard these days. If you do, be careful. Do not spill your ashtray on your paper pad. The cordless handheld vacuum has not been invented yet. You will have to clean up the old fashion way. Get a brush and a trash container.
When summer arrives, it will not be fun. It will be many years before air conditioning and electric fans become popular. Everyone wears white clothes to stay cool. It is not about fashion. You may do your best work in the early morning. Temperatures will be cooler, at that time. If you work at night, the light may not be good. You can use oil lamps or candles.
Conclusion
You may feel badly about your home work area. There may be many things that can use upgrading. If you cannot afford it, take time to appreciate it. Do that by looking into the dim corridors of the past.
